The latest issue of Selvedge looks at choosing white as a model for sustainability in textiles. According to the United Nations Environment Program, textile dye is the second-largest global water polluter and the fashion industry’s biggest offender. Given that the overwhelming majority of wool, linen, cotton, and silk, in its unprocessed state, is a neutral shade from white through grey to black, a move towards white might be one path closer to sustainability in textiles.
